[00:00:03.880] My name is Jonathan Guevara. [00:00:09.120] I'm an orthopaedic surgeon here at the Hand to Shoulder Centre [00:00:12.400] and I perform shoulder and elbow surgery. [00:00:15.400] I first had the opportunity to shadow [00:00:17.240] an orthopaedic surgeon when I was 19 years old [00:00:20.480] and essentially I never looked back. [00:00:23.760] Seeing the marriage of applied science and anatomy and being able to help people [00:00:30.360] really formed my decision to become a surgeon. [00:00:34.720] I think the anatomy is fascinating and the constant development [00:00:40.320] of new surgical techniques is interesting to keep up with [00:00:43.920] but the thing that brings it home is just seeing patients get better. [00:00:47.480] When patients come in to our office, [00:00:50.960] one, I want them to feel that everything is dedicated to that. [00:00:55.800] Everyone is involved in your care from the very beginning. [00:01:01.840] And then when you come to see the doctor, [00:01:04.800] you come to see me, there's going to be a full evaluation of what's going on. [00:01:10.000] Then afterwards looking at therapy, [00:01:13.600] again, phone calls, medications, everything is centred around the patient. [00:01:18.080] We've really tried to build [00:01:19.600] that environment here at the Hand to Shoulder Centre. [00:01:22.760] My favourite part about getting to know patients and treating patients [00:01:27.080] is just learning who they are and learning about [00:01:30.640] what their lifestyle is, what their goals are. [00:01:34.480] Are they trying to work more on the weekends? [00:01:38.000] Are they just trying to live a pain-free life? [00:01:39.880] Do they want to have an easier time getting around with their grandkids? [00:01:44.040] And just learning of those things about the patient and then understanding [00:01:47.160] what we can form together for goals.
